Google Classroom assignments: every how-to in one place

Updated October 2026 · Checked against Google’s help center

The short version

To add an assignment: open the class › Classwork › Create › Assignment. Add a title, instructions, points, a due date and any attachments, then click Assign (or use the arrow next to it to Schedule or Save draft).

Pick the guide below for the step you're stuck on.

What each assignment box does

BoxWhat it's for
ForOne class or several.
All studentsUntick it to assign to chosen students (one class only, up to 100 at a time). The Groups tab assigns to student groups.
Points100 by default, any number, or Ungraded.
DueNo due date by default. Add a date and, if you want, a time.
TopicOne topic per assignment, so it lands in the right section of Classwork.
RubricAdd or reuse a rubric. Editing rubrics is web-only.
Grade category, Grading periodShown once you've set them up in class Settings.
Tag learning goalsTag skills or standards (added in 2026).

Assign now, later, or not yet

  • Assign posts it now.
  • Schedule (arrow next to Assign) picks a date and time. Type AM if you mean morning; times default to PM. Posts can appear up to 5 minutes late.
  • Save draft keeps it on the Classwork page, visible only to teachers.

On the phone apps, Assign (Android) or Post (iPhone/iPad) sends it; schedule and draft are under More (⋮), and scheduling works for one class at a time.

Edit after posting

Classwork › the assignment's More (⋮) › Edit, change it, then Save. Edits only change that one class. You can't switch an attachment to "Make a copy for each student" once it's posted.

Questions teachers ask

What's the difference between an assignment, a question and a material?

An assignment collects work and can be graded. A question asks for one short answer or a multiple-choice pick. A material shares a file or link with nothing to turn in.

Can I post one assignment to several classes?

Yes. In the For box at the top of the assignment, pick more than one class. It goes to all students in each class; you can't pick individual students across classes.

Why is my assignment marked Missing at the due time?

Work is marked Missing or Turned in late at the exact due time. Google suggests setting 9:01 AM if work handed in at 9:00 should count as on time.
