How to create an assignment in Google Classroom

Updated October 2026 · Checked against Google’s help center

Quick answer

  1. Open the class and click Classwork.
  2. Click Create › Assignment.
  3. Type a title and instructions.
  4. Set Points, Due date and Topic on the right.
  5. Under Attach, add a Drive file, link, YouTube video or upload.
  6. Click Assign, or use the arrow next to it to Schedule or Save draft.

On a computer

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and open the class.
  2. Click Classwork › Create › Assignment.
  3. Enter a title and, if you like, instructions. Keep instructions to what a student needs to start.
  4. On the right, set:
    • For: this class, or tick more classes.
    • Points: change from 100, or pick Ungraded.
    • Due: pick a date, then Time if it matters.
    • Topic: pick one or Create topic.
    • Rubric: optional.
  5. Under Attach, add what students need. For a worksheet in Google Docs or Slides, choose Drive, then set Make a copy for each student (how).
  6. Click Assign. Or click the arrow beside it to Schedule or Save draft.

On Android or iPhone/iPad

  1. Open the class › Classwork › Add (+) › Assignment.
  2. Enter the title and instructions.
  3. Tap Attach to add a Drive file, link, photo or upload.
  4. Tap Assign on Android or Post on iPhone/iPad. For Schedule or Save draft, tap More (⋮).

Tips that save grading time

  • Put it in a topic every time. Students and families find work by topic.
  • One task per assignment keeps the Missing list honest.
  • Set a due time one minute past your cutoff (9:01 for 9:00).
  • Attach the answer format: a Doc copy per student beats "make your own document."

Questions teachers ask

Can I assign work to only some students?

Yes, in a single class. Click the All students drop-down, untick All students, then tick the names (up to 100 at a time). Or use the Groups tab if you've made student groups.

Can I create an assignment on my phone?

Yes. In the app, open the class › Classwork › Add (+) › Assignment, fill it in, tap Attach for files, then Assign (Android) or Post (iPhone/iPad). Schedule and Save draft are under More (⋮).

What can I attach?

On a computer: Drive, YouTube, Create (a new Doc, Slides, Sheet, Drawing or Form), Upload and Link. Schools with Education Plus or the Teaching and Learning add-on also get Record (up to 5 minutes) and Practice sets.
