How to make a Google Classroom
Quick answer
- Go to classroom.google.com and sign in with your school account.
- Click Add (+) at the top, then Create class.
- Type a Class name (the only required box). Section, Subject and Room are optional.
- Click Create. Your class code is at the top of the Stream.
No Create class option? Your account can only join classes. Switch to your teacher account or ask your school's Google admin to verify you as a teacher.
Create the class
On a computer
- Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign in.
- At the top of the page, click Add (+) › Create class.
- Enter the Class name. It can't contain a web address.
- Optional: add a Section (a short description or class time, such as "Period 3"), Subject, Room and Level(s).
- Click Create.
On Android or iPhone/iPad: open the Classroom app, tap Add (+), tap Create class, fill in the same boxes, then tap Create.
To change any of this later on the web, click More (⋮) on the class card › Edit.
Classes your school made for you. Some districts create classes from the student information system. They appear on your homepage with an Accept button. Students can't see the class until you accept it.
Get students into the class
You have three ways in. Use the one that fits your students' age.
| Method | Where to find it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Class code | Class Settings › General, or at the top of the Stream. Click Full screen to project it. | Grade 3 and up, in the room |
| Invite link | Class card More (⋮) › Copy invite link | Email or your website |
| Email invite | People › Invite students › type names, emails or a Google Group | Young students and anyone absent |
Class codes are 6 to 8 letters and numbers, typed exactly as shown, including capitals. If a code ends up somewhere it shouldn't, go to Settings, click the down arrow next to Manage invite codes, then Reset invite codes. The old code and invite link stop working.
Students join from their own Classroom homepage with Add (+) › Join class, then type the code. For Pre-K to grade 2, print a class code card per child (the Setup Kit has them) or send email invites so children only have to click Join.
Your first-week checklist
Do these before students arrive. Each takes a minute or two.
- Name it so families can tell classes apart. "Room 12 Reading" beats "ELA".
- Set the header. Click Customize on the Stream and upload a header, or pick one of Google's. Free headers here.
- Create your topics on the Classwork page (for example "Week 1", "Math", "Read-aloud"), so posts don't become one long list.
- Decide who can post. In Settings, choose whether students can post and comment on the Stream.
- Add a co-teacher if you share the class: People › Invite teachers.
- Set up grading in Settings › Grading: grade categories and whether to show overall grades to students.
- Invite families to guardian email summaries (school accounts only): People › Invite guardians next to each student. Full parent guide.
- Post a welcome with one easy task, so every student practices opening and turning in work in week one.

Questions teachers ask
Can I make a Google Classroom with a personal Gmail account?
Yes. Anyone over 13 with a personal Google Account can create a class, up to 30 classes a day. Classes on a personal account are limited to 250 members, and students with school accounts can't join a class whose primary teacher uses a personal account.
Why can't I create a class with my school account?
Your admin decides who can create classes. If you chose "I'm a student" at first sign-in, or you're still a pending teacher, you can only join classes. Only your admin can change your role.
How many students can be in one class?
Up to 1,000 members (teachers and students) on a school account, or 250 on a personal account. Up to 50 teachers can share a class. Google notes these limits can change.
Can I create a class on my phone?
Yes. In the Android or iPhone app, tap Add (+), then Create class. Changing the class theme and copying a class only work on a computer.
