Why is Google Classroom not working?
Try these first
- Check Google's status page at google.com/appsstatus. If Classroom shows an outage, wait.
- Check the account. Click your profile picture (top right). Most problems are the wrong account: a personal Gmail instead of the school one.
- Use a supported browser: the latest Chrome, or current Firefox or Safari.
- Open a private (incognito) window and sign in only to your school account. If it works there, clear the browser's cache or remove extra accounts.
- Update the app on a phone or tablet, or try the website instead.
Match the message to the fix
| What you see | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "You can't use Classroom with this account." | Signed in with the wrong account | Switch to your school account |
| "Your administrator hasn't activated Classroom" or "This service has been disabled by your admin" | The school turned Classroom off for you | Contact your school's tech support |
| No Create class option (teacher) | Your account can only join classes | Ask your admin to verify you as a teacher |
| "Can't invite users from this domain" | School settings block outside members | Ask your admin |
| "Can't invite more class members" | Daily invitation limit reached | Try again tomorrow |
| "Class not found" from an invite email | Signed in with another account | Use the drop-down in the email to pick the Classroom account |
| Class code doesn't work | Typo, wrong account, or the code was reset | Retype it exactly, check the account, ask the teacher |
| Turn in fails (personal accounts) | Teacher's Drive is full | Teacher frees up Drive storage |
| "Make a copy for each student" failed | Copying failed or Drive is full | Recreate the assignment; check Drive space |
| Can't comment | The teacher turned off student posting | Ask the teacher |
If the page won't load at all
These are general browser fixes, not Classroom-specific steps from Google, but they solve most loading problems:
- Refresh, then close and reopen the browser.
- Try an incognito or private window. If Classroom works there, an extension or saved data is the problem.
- Clear cache and cookies for google.com.
- Turn off extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers and privacy tools.
- Restart the device and check the Wi-Fi with another website.
- Try another device or the app. If one works, the problem is local.
Account mix-ups (the most common cause)
- A school account can't join a class taught from a personal account. The reverse only works if the school allows it.
- Children 13 and under should use school accounts; a parent-managed personal account can't create or teach classes.
- Students on school accounts can't create classes, and a teacher who chose "I'm a student" at first sign-in needs the admin to change the role.
Questions teachers ask
What does "You can't use Classroom with this account" mean?
You're signed in with an account that isn't set up for Classroom, usually another work account. Sign out and sign in with your school account (or your personal account, if your class uses one).
Why does my class code not work?
Check you're signed in with the right account, then type the code exactly as shown (6 to 8 letters and numbers, capitals matter, no spaces). If it still fails, the teacher may have reset or turned off the code. School accounts also can't join a class whose teacher uses a personal Gmail account.
Why can't my child sign in with their own Gmail?
Google says children 13 and under should only use Classroom with a school (Google Workspace for Education) or Workspace for Nonprofits account. A personal account managed by a parent can't create or teach classes.
Students can't click Turn in. Why?
On personal accounts this usually means the teacher's Google Drive storage is full. Free up space, then ask students to try again.
