How to add a video to a Google Classroom assignment

Updated October 2026 · Checked against Google’s help center

Quick answer

  1. Open the assignment (Classwork › Create › Assignment).
  2. Under Attach, click YouTube.
  3. Search for the video or paste its link, then click Add.
  4. Click Assign.

For your own video file, use Upload or Drive instead. YouTube must be allowed by your school's admin.

Attach a YouTube video

  1. In the class, go to Classwork › Create › Assignment (or Material if there's nothing to turn in).
  2. Under Attach, click YouTube.
  3. Search YouTube or paste the video's URL.
  4. Click Add, then finish the assignment and click Assign.

Attach your own video

  • From Drive: Attach › Drive, then pick the video. Students view it by default.
  • From your computer: Attach › Upload. It's saved to the class Drive folder.
  • Record one now: schools with Education Plus or the Teaching and Learning add-on see Record, for up to 5 minutes of video, audio or screen.

Add interactive questions (Education Plus)

  1. In the assignment, under Attach, click YouTube and choose the video.
  2. Click Add questions.
  3. Move to a moment in the video and click + Add. Choose Multiple choice, Checkboxes or Open-ended.
  4. Use Details to add instructions or trim the start and end.
  5. Click Try as a student to check it (every auto-graded question needs a correct answer first).
  6. Attach the activity and assign.

Multiple-choice and checkbox questions are graded automatically. Build questions before attaching: once attached, they can't be edited.

Questions teachers ask

Why is there no YouTube button?

Your school's admin has to allow YouTube in Classroom. If it's off, ask your admin, or share the video another way your school allows.

Can I add questions inside a YouTube video?

Yes, with interactive YouTube questions, if your school has Education Plus or the Teaching and Learning add-on. It's only on a computer.

Can I edit the questions after attaching?

No. Questions can only be edited before the video activity is attached. To change them, create a new activity.

Can students watch on their phones?

Usually, yes, as long as the school allows YouTube for students. Interactive YouTube questions are set up on a computer.
