Google Classroom parent access: the complete guide

Updated October 2026 · Checked against Google’s help center · Leer en español

Quick answer

Parents can't log in to Google Classroom. Instead, a teacher invites them to guardian email summaries: a daily or weekly email listing missing work, upcoming work and what the teacher posted.

Teachers: open the class › People › Invite guardians next to the student › type the parent's email › Invite. Parents: open the invitation email and click Accept twice. Any email address works; no Google account needed.

This only works with school (Google Workspace for Education) accounts, and your school's admin must have guardian access turned on.

There is no full parent login. Google's FAQ says guardians can't access Classroom directly because of privacy laws.

For teachers: invite a guardian

Before you start, guardian access must be on for your class: class Settings › General › Guardian access › turn it on and choose Just this class or All classes. It's off for each class by default.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com on a computer (or use the Android app).
  2. Open the class › People.
  3. Next to the student's name, click Invite guardians.
  4. Type the parent's email. Separate several addresses with commas.
  5. Click Invite.

You'll see (Invited) next to the address until they accept, then the parent's name. The student gets a confirmation email.

Good to know:

  • One acceptance covers every class. If another teacher or the school already linked a parent, you'll see them too.
  • Class codes don't work for parents. It has to be an email invitation.
  • Email all guardians at once from People › Email All Guardians (everyone is added in BCC).
  • Remove a guardian: People › More next to the guardian › Remove guardians. This removes them from all the student's classes at your school.

Send a short letter home first so families know an email from Google is coming. The Setup Kit has one in English and Spanish.

For parents: accept the invitation

  1. Look for an email invitation to Google Classroom guardian summaries (check spam).
  2. Click Accept. If the email isn't meant for you, click I'm Not The Guardian.
  3. Click Accept again to confirm.

Summaries arrive weekly at first. To change that, click Settings at the bottom of any summary, sign in, and choose Daily (Monday–Friday), Weekly or No summaries. You can also set your time zone. No Google account? Click Create New Account on that page, or keep the weekly default.

Unsubscribe at the bottom of any email stops summaries. Without a Google account, unsubscribing also removes you as a guardian, so you'd need a new invite to start again.

For school admins

Guardian access is on by default for K–12 schools and off for higher education. In the Admin console it's under Classroom › General settings › Guardian access, where you also choose whether All verified teachers or Only domain administrators can manage guardians. Admins can add guardians in bulk with the Classroom API or GAM.

Questions families ask

Can parents see grades in Google Classroom?

No. Guardian summaries and the guardian preview never include grades or student work. Families see grades through the school's gradebook or report cards, or by sitting with their child.

Does a parent need a Gmail or Google account?

No. Summaries can go to any email address. A Google account is only needed to change how often summaries arrive, see which children are linked, or open the read-only "View in Classroom" preview.

How long does a guardian invitation last?

120 days. After that the teacher (or school) has to send a new one.

How many guardians can a student have?

Up to 20.

The parent accepted but gets no emails. Why?

Summaries only go out when there's something to report, and each teacher must turn on guardian access for their class (it's off by default). The guardian may also have chosen No summaries in their settings.

Why don't I see "Invite guardians"?

The most common reasons are that guardian access is off for your school, your admin hasn't verified you as a teacher, only admins are allowed to manage guardians, or you're on the iPhone/iPad app. Invites can be sent from a computer or the Android app. Students using personal Google accounts can't have guardians.

Should parents just sign in with their child's account?

Most schools ask families not to. It usually breaks the school's technology rules, may trigger security alerts, and everything the parent does is logged as the student. Guardian summaries are the supported route.
