About this resource

These two pages help students in grades 3–5 practice listening to a partner and making a group plan. Students choose an October or nature display theme, share a contribution and check that they understood a partner’s idea. They then use both ideas in a short plan.

A second page presents a group member who wants to change jobs. Students use the group’s agreement to decide what can happen, write a reply and test their own agreement with a partner. The seven numbered tasks include circle, check and underline choices, short talk scripts and ruled writing space.

The separate two-page teacher guide includes preparation, a model, numbered answers and response criteria, acceptable alternatives, a misconception and feedback. Students need to communicate or select an idea and follow a short situation; the teacher may read aloud or scribe. Students can pass or use a supplied idea.

Students will

  • Report a partner’s chosen idea accurately after checking it.
  • Combine two display ideas in a shared plan.
  • Write and test a group agreement that allows changed choices.
