Main idea supported by details
Reading & writing worksheet
Four short informational readings and eight responses help learners explain a main idea with supporting details. Separate teacher guide included.
- Grades 3–5
- 5 pages
- Answer key included
- Printer-friendly, low ink
What’s included
- 5 student pages with a worked example and four original readings
- 8 open responses with space for main ideas and evidence
- Separate 8-page teacher guide with all keys, alternatives, supports and next steps
Practice explaining a main idea with evidence from both paragraphs. This set includes four original short readings about tide pools, maps, beaver ponds and moonlight, plus an explicitly imagined shared-tool example. Eight open responses ask learners to state or improve a main idea and explain how details support it.
The set is intended for grades 3–5 learners who can follow a short two-paragraph informational text, locate explicit facts, distinguish a topic from a sentence and explain a connection with vocabulary support. Each reading and its response boxes share one sheet. The five student pages and separate eight-page teacher guide are provided as two PDFs.
How to use it
- Model the difference between a topic, a narrow idea and a supported main idea using the Find the main idea from details reference sheet.
- Guide the tide-pool and map readings, then use the beaver reading for independent synthesis.
- Keep Moonlight in the sky for a later check. Collect the main idea, explanation of the claim and supporting details before discussing answers.
Teacher support
The companion includes complete keys with criteria and alternatives, misconception-specific feedback, vocabulary help, access options and next steps. Different wording is welcome when it accurately covers both paragraphs and the detail links make sense.
Use vocabulary clarification, read-aloud access or oral rehearsal as needed. A scribe or AAC can preserve the same explanation goal. The guide distinguishes this focused main-idea practice from full summarizing or comprehensive standards mastery.
Students will
- State a main idea that covers both paragraphs of a short informational text
- Explain how one accurate detail from each paragraph supports the main idea
- Revise a narrow or unsupported main-idea statement
Teaching notes
Works for: Small group, Individual, Whole class, Homeschool

Support and extension
