- Separate 2-page teacher guide with criteria for all 12 cards, alternative answers, boundaries and feedback
Use 12 classroom conversation cards to help partners share interests, listen closely and ask questions. Learners imagine everyday classroom scenes: choosing a job for a sign, trying paper art, sharing a sound pattern or planning a paper playground. The activity works at the start of a school year or whenever learners need practice talking with a partner.
The five student pages include the Meet your partner directions sheet and model exchange, three four-card sheets with dashed cut lines, and the Record four conversations response sheet. Each response slot has a line for the card number, two lines for a sentence about a partner’s choice and two lines for a related question. The separate two-page teacher guide gives criteria for every card, accepted alternatives, boundaries, feedback and access options.
How to use it
- Print the directions sheet and three card sheets for each pair. Cut around the dashed rectangles and discard the gutters. Print one Record four conversations response sheet per learner for four cards; use three copies per learner for all 12. Supply pencils.
- Model the check-back exchange on the Meet your partner sheet. Partners choose four different cards, take turns speaking and repeat what they heard to check the meaning.
- Ask a question about the speaker’s idea, then swap roles on the same card. Each learner records one faithful sentence and one related question for each chosen card on the Record four conversations response sheet. Oral reasons do not need to be written again.
Readiness and support
Designed for learners in grades 3–5 who can take turns and write a simple sentence after oral rehearsal. Read directions or cards aloud, use AAC or offer an exact scribe while keeping the learner’s ideas. Learners may pass or choose another card. Check the spoken exchange directly; written answers alone do not show that partners confirmed the report.
The discussion practices selected components of CCSS SL.3.1b–c: turn-taking, checking understanding and staying on topic. It does not establish mastery of the full standard.
Students will
- Share an interest or choice in a concrete classroom situation.
- Repeat a partner’s idea and check that it matches what they mean.
- Ask a related question and write a faithful report of a partner’s choice.
