## About

Use these short report cards with grades 3–5 readers who can identify main ideas and write connected sentences. Learners write a faithful summary in one or two sentences, then explain a detail or meaning choice using the report.

The student PDF has ten pages: a worked model, six sheets containing twelve cards, a two-page response set with four slots, and a final report check. Each selected card has four ruled lines for its summary and four for its explanation. The final check has separate fields for a summary, a detail left out and the reason for leaving it out. The separate two-page teacher guide includes all 26 answers or exemplars, acceptance criteria and specific feedback.

## Readiness

Learners should be able to read a short report, locate its central idea and write connected sentences. Preview unfamiliar vocabulary as needed. The model sheet explains proposed, trial, rehearsal and exhibition. The reports provide practice with causes, comparisons, sequences and limits such as a suggested plan or a short trial.

## How to use it

1. Provide the model, cards, both pages of the **Record four summaries** response set and a pencil. Cards can stay whole or be precut along their dashed edges. Keep the final check aside.
2. Model the return-tray example and guide one card. Learners choose four different cards and write A and B in the four slots, keeping each report visible and attempting it before keys or peer comparison. Three response sets cover all twelve cards.
3. Discuss the main relationship, necessary limits and relevance of details. Accept equivalent concise wording and discuss oral corrections while keeping first attempts distinct from supported work.
4. Give **Summarize a new report** individually after practice and before feedback or peer answers. Keep the report visible and record substantive support.

## Support and extend

Offer one card at a time, vocabulary preview, oral rehearsal, extra processing time, a scribe or AAC. A useful frame is “The report explains ___ and ___.” For extension, compare faithful summaries for concision, then try a later text on a different subject.

The final report is new within this packet and uses the same report format. It does not establish broad transfer or mastery. Partial standards practice addresses CCSS RI.4.2 through main ideas, key details and summaries of short reports.

## Students will

- Write a concise one- or two-sentence summary that retains the main relationship and necessary limits.
- Explain a detail or meaning choice using evidence from a short report.
- Distinguish a proposal, short trial or majority preference from a completed or universal result.
