## About

Use this mixed-review set with late-kindergarten learners who already know the five short vowels and the consonants listed in the teacher guide. Children read isolated three-sound words, connect sounds to letters, compare similar words and spell different combinations using the same taught code.

The four student sheets keep the work in a clear sequence: a cup model and four supported maps; six middle-letter tasks that children can complete independently after the routine is introduced; oral word comparisons and sound changes; then one reserved word reading and four dictated spellings. Primary writing guides sit inside every sound field.

A separate two-page teacher guide puts the exact model, sound-choice, substitution and dictation scripts on page one. Page two supplies all answers, acceptance criteria, specific feedback and practical access options. The tasks use a neutral context and require no holiday materials.

## Readiness

Learners should already blend and segment three spoken sounds and know short a, e, i, o and u, plus b, c as /k/, d, f, g as /g/, h, l, m, n, p, r, s as /s/ and t. Agree on the learner’s natural pronunciation; a dialect difference is not a decoding error. Directions may be teacher-read, while designated word targets stay reserved for the learner.

## How to use it

1. Print the four student sheets and provide a pencil and an opaque cover. Model cup, then guide the first four maps using the separate teacher guide.
2. Introduce the middle-letter routine and let children complete that sheet independently. If collecting first readings, observe before giving word, sound or meaning help.
3. Use the comparison sheet for oral responses and the specified sound cues. The fan/fin task deliberately cues the target; changing mop to hop reuses a practiced word.
4. On the final sheet, hear the reserved reading first, then cover that word completely and put earlier sheets away before dictation. Record reading, spelling and help separately.

## Support and extend

Show one item at a time, allow processing time, and use movable letters, pointing, AAC or a scribe when needed. Teach insecure prerequisites before continuing. For extension, reverse a practiced sound change and use the word in a spoken sentence.

The final word combinations are new within this packet. Supplied box counts support segmentation, and reading one’s own spelling is readback. This small check does not establish five-vowel spelling mastery, automaticity or lasting retention. Partial standards practice covers CCSS RF.K.2d/e and RF.K.3a/b/d; the vowel work is limited to short sounds.

## Students will

- Blend taught letter sounds to read three-sound words.
- Identify the letters and sounds that differ between similar words.
- Spell new CVC combinations using previously taught short vowels and consonants.
