Literary genres
Practice choosing a story genre or the detail that supports it. These five sheets are for grades 3–5 students who can read short grade 3 stories and know the words story, problem and clue.
Five original excerpts contrast mystery, fantasy, science fiction, a tale passed down within a fictional family, and realistic fiction. A completed pumpkin-and-clues example introduces the task. Students circle one answer for each of 20 numbered tasks, then choose three endings for the same glowing-pumpkin premise and check a claim about scary stories. Those four final tasks are included in the 20.
The packet compares the strongest printed clue. Genres can mix: a familiar object alone does not decide the genre, and an ordinary battery light is different from an imagined new tool. The family tale is original fiction, not an authentic historical or cultural account.
The separate two-page teacher companion includes prerequisites, a five-step teaching sequence, all 20 checked answers with decisive clues, misconception feedback, practical support and an oral extension. Allow 1–3 minutes to print the sheets and set out pencils, then 25–35 minutes in short sessions.
For support, read a passage aloud and point to one named detail while the student selects the answer. For an extension, change one cause orally and have a partner identify the strongest genre clue. No written story or explanation is required.
This is partial practice for CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.1: answer questions using printed story details. Selected answers do not demonstrate every part of that standard. Download separate student and teacher PDFs, or make an editable copy of either Google Doc.
