## About

Help early readers connect the sounds they hear to the spellings they write. This teaching set uses eight words: and, can, in, it, is, his, has and said.

The four student sheets include eight supported word maps, sound and spelling comparisons, four short sentences with oral meaning questions, and a reading row followed by four dictated spelling maps. Primary writing guides sit inside the sound boxes. Each dictation row has three boxes, with a clear direction to leave unused boxes empty. Learners keep ai together for the middle sound in said and notice the added first sound in his.

The separate two-page teacher guide gives two models, exact sound-change and dictation scripts, all 20 answers, acceptance criteria, specific feedback and access options. Directions and questions are teacher-read; learners read the designated words and sentences.

## Readiness

Use this set with K–1 learners who can blend and segment two and three spoken sounds, including the ending of and. They should already know short a, i and e, the consonants listed in the teacher guide, and the required capital letters. Teach the specified final s sound and the ai spelling in said before practice.

## How to use it

1. Print the four student pages and provide a pencil and an opaque cover sheet. Model can and said using the separate teacher guide.
2. Use the mapping, comparison and sentence sheets in order. Read the directions and questions aloud while learners read the words and sentences.
3. On the final sheet, hear the printed word row first. Cover that row and put earlier models away before dictation. Record reading and spelling separately, then revisit the taught words another day and in another context.

## Support and extend

Show one item at a time, rehearse meaning and allow processing time. Movable letter groups, pointing, AAC or a scribe can reduce motor or communication barriers. For extension, change man back to can and identify the changed sound and spelling, or make a new spoken sentence with a taught word.

This set provides partial practice in CCSS RF.1.3b and RF.1.3g. The supported maps and taught-word dictation are practice, rather than an independent segmentation or retention assessment.

## Students will

- Match each spoken sound to its conventional spelling in the taught word set.
- Distinguish similar words by connecting their spoken sounds and letters.
- Read the taught words in short sentences and retrieve their spellings with models hidden.
