## About

Use this compact word sort with kindergarten and first-grade learners who can blend and segment two spoken sounds. Children read six taught words, sort them by the vowel they hear and connect each sound to its spelling. They then choose **to** or **too** in two short sentences and explain the meaning orally.

The student PDF is one page. It includes the six-word bank, two vowel groups, six two-sound maps and two whole-word writing fields. Primary writing guides support every required written response. A separate one-page teacher lesson card provides the models, exact sentence scripts, full key, acceptance criteria and specific feedback.

## Readiness

Learners should know g, n, s, t and d, long o as in go, and oo as in too. The teacher explicitly teaches final o representing /u/ in to and do before the sort. Use full isolated word forms while sorting; natural weak forms in connected speech are not errors. Directions and sentence frames can be teacher-read.

## How to use it

1. Provide the student page and a pencil. Use the teacher card to model go and too, tapping two sounds and keeping oo together. Teach the vowel spelling in to and do.
2. Have learners read each bank word, tap its sounds and write it once in the matching vowel group. Read back the completed maps. Any order within a group is valid.
3. Read the two sentence frames from the teacher card. Learners write to or too in the whole-word fields and tell why the word fits the meaning.

## Support and extend

Offer one word at a time and allow processing time. Movable teacher-written spelling groups, pointing, AAC or a scribe can preserve the sound-and-spelling goal. Record actual reading, written choices and help separately. For extension, change no to so, name the sound and spelling that change and use a word in a spoken sentence.

This is supported practice with supplied words. It does not establish independent word recognition, automaticity or lasting retention. Partial standards practice addresses CCSS RF.1.2d and RF.1.3g within this small word set.
