- Separate 2-page teacher guide with all 27 example answers, alternative-response criteria, specific feedback and access options
Help learners in grades 4–5 revise or combine sentences without changing who acts or how the stated ideas connect. Learners use because and so for reason and result, although for contrast, and after for event order, then explain their choices.
The nine-page student PDF has one model/reference sheet and eight sheets containing twelve tasks. All 27 sentence and explanation parts have separate ruled spaces, including the three parts of each final application task. The separate two-page teacher guide includes every example answer, alternative-response criteria, boundaries for interpreting facts, specific feedback and access options. Answers go on the sheets; a notebook is not required.
Readiness
Learners should be able to read short scenes, identify who does an action and write complete sentences. Read aloud or clarify words when decoding would obscure the grammar goal. Record substantive help so a supported response stays distinct from an independent first attempt.
How to use it
- Use the Grammar choices that keep meaning model sheet before practice. Read its Omar and Inez, tray and mitt, and gate examples. Guide task 1 orally, then select short practice sheets.
- Ask learners to check actors, reasons, contrasts and event order against the supplied scene. Accept faithful equivalent wording and explanations that match the learner’s actual sentence.
- Keep the Express the same reason two ways sheet and the Write a precise message sheet aside for first independent attempts after practice. Read or clarify words without supplying a connector, event or answer; record help before feedback.
Support and extend
Offer oral rehearsal, AAC, typing or a scribe, and pace selected sheets to readiness. Separate meaning feedback from punctuation feedback; a scribed comma is not independent punctuation. After the final attempt, invite learners to express two original facts in two sentence patterns and compare the meaning.
The final contexts are new within this packet; the grammar and response form remain familiar. These tasks support partial CCSS L.5.3a sentence combining for meaning and the conjunction component of L.5.1a. They do not establish whole-standard mastery or broad transfer.
Students will
- Revise a sentence to preserve the stated actor and action.
- Use because, so, although and after to preserve a stated reason, contrast or event order.
- Explain a grammatical revision and distinguish supplied facts from an invented earlier event.
