## About

Help learners explain what an expression means and show how the surrounding scene supports that meaning. This set is designed for grade 3 readers who can follow two or three connected sentences and explain a link. Grades 4–5 can use it for extra practice.

The five student pages contain ten original scenes and 20 numbered responses. Each scene has a separate field for a one-sentence meaning and another for a detail with an explanation of why it fits. A paired context asks learners to compare literal and figurative uses of the same expression. The last two scenes provide a new application within the packet.

The separate two-page teacher guide includes a complete model, all 20 example answers, alternative responses and boundaries for accepting an answer. It also offers feedback for literal interpretations, invented details and responses that quote without explaining. Learners do not need to name a figurative-language type.

## How to use it

1. Print the five student pages and provide pencils. Read the model in the separate teacher guide and show how a meaning, a stated detail and an explanation connect.
2. Try items 1–2 together, then let learners complete the other scene pairs. Clarify ordinary vocabulary. Teach unfamiliar shared expressions as practice.
3. Keep the final two scenes for a first response before group discussion. Use the guide to accept faithful meanings and different supporting details that fit.

## Support and extend

Offer oral rehearsal, AAC or an exact scribe while the learner chooses the meaning and detail. A sentence frame can help: “Here it means __. The scene says __. That fits because __.” For extension, create a different comparison for the same idea and justify it with a scene detail.

This resource practices the literal and nonliteral meaning component of grade 3 Language L.3.5a. It is not a comprehensive standards assessment.
