Bring mixed-coin counting into a cooperative matching game. This set is designed for grade 2 learners who know the values of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, read numbers through 100, and can count on with changing steps.

The eight-page student PDF begins with a coin reference, a worked count and three game steps. Six sheets contain 24 cards, four per page, with dashed cutting guides. Each card has a My total value and a Next coins collection. Students count the collection, find the matching My total, and build one chain that uses every card once before returning to the start.

The coin drawings are original illustrations of selected coin backs. Each collection also has a written description. Real coins can have other designs, so the activity focuses on using coin values rather than recognizing every circulating design.

The final sheet has four chosen-card records, a new coin-set total, and an error question about counting coins versus counting cents. Learners write short numeric responses and explain their thinking orally. The separate two-page teacher guide provides all 24 solutions and matches, the full chain, complete check-sheet criteria, misconception-specific feedback and practical adaptations.

How to use it

  1. Print the student pages and provide pencils. Cut out all 24 cards on the dashed lines.
  2. Use the reference and worked count, then demonstrate one card with a partner. Keep every card in play; the class wins when all 24 join once and the match returns to the start.
  3. Have learners record four chosen cards and tell you how they counted. Keep check questions 5–6 covered until those records are complete, then uncover them for independent work before discussion.

Support and extend

Read directions and collection descriptions aloud, use familiar coins, or accept pointing, AAC or an exact scribe. Keep the learner choosing values and counting. For extension, replace one collection with different coins of equal value and explain why its next match stays the same. A few cards can be used for counting practice, but a partial deck is not a smaller closed chain.

The work practices the coin-value and cents word-problem component of CCSS 2.MD.C.8; it does not cover bills or making change.

Students will

  • Find the value of a mixed collection of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters up to 100 cents.
  • Match a coin-set total to the next card and account for every coin once.
  • Explain why the number of coins can differ from their total value.

Support and extension

Read directions and coin descriptions aloud, use familiar coins, or accept pointing, AAC or an exact scribe. Keep the learner choosing values and counting. Extend by replacing a collection with different coins of equal value and explaining why its next match stays the same.
